What to expect from TDS when you order a deck

Once you have decided to order your new deck from us, we have a process in place to ensure that the whole manufacturing and installation goes as smoothly as possible. With a commitment to transparency and customer satisfaction, we have put together some guidelines outlining the most important key steps from the moment that you commit to a new deck from us.

1. Customer Inquiry, Quotation Process and Formal Quote

When we are first contacted by a customer, we ask that they send us photos and a layout of the boat via our contact page on our website so that we can understand their specific requirements. Our team then conducts its own research by reviewing the layout and photos provided, as well as gathering information about your boat. Based on this information, we develop a budgetary quote, and if the customer is satisfied with it, we provide a formal quote.

The formal quote outlines all the essential details, including design specifications, materials, price and timelines. It is crucial that you read through this document carefully. Taking the time to review it not only helps you understand what to expect but also gives you an opportunity to ask questions or clarify any uncertainties before signing. Once the quote is acceepted, we issue a pro forma invoice for the templating/digitizing, after which we will organize a date to digitize the deck. Once we have the digital file, our sales and project management teams meet to review both the quote and the digitized layout to ensure that the quoted square footage is accurate. Should there be any discrepancies, we adjust the quote accordingly and will call you to explain the changes.

2. Securing Your Order with a Deposit

After both parties agree on the final numbers, we send an order confirmation for your signature and will then send an invoice for 50% of the materials cost and the cost of digitization so that we can begin building the deck. Once the funds are received, we start production, later invoicing for the remaining 50%. Travel costs associated with the digitization are invoiced separately after the activity has concluded.

3. Project Management and Timeline Confirmation

We will assigns a dedicated Project Manager to your deck, and they will be your primary point of contact throughout the entire process. Your Project Manager is responsible for confirming the production and installation timeline and ensuring that every phase of the project is scheduled appropriately. They will communicate any updates, answer your questions, and address any concerns that may arise during production.

4. Final Payment and Scheduling Shipment

Before the deck is shipped and installed, we require that the full remaining balance is settled and we can then schedule shipment and installation without any delays.

5. Installation

You will have received an estimated quote for installation. Once the deck is installed we ask the captain or project manager to walk the deck with our team and get a sign off and release for the deck and then we invoice them for the final amount along with any associated travel, travel time, accommodation and subsistence. We will invoice you the final amount once the installation has been done.

Despite the environmental and humanitarian controversy surrounding teak, many owners worldwide continue to request it.

This guide explores the different wood materials currently available , helping industry stakeholders and owners to make informed decisions about the best option for their deck .

The information is divided into two sections titled "Wood we work with" and "Wood we do not work with." It is intended solely for educational purposes, providing detailed information on the characteristics, merits and concerns of each type. MYANMAR TEAK

The importation of Myanmar teak into Europe has been illegal since 2013 under the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR), which aims to prevent the sale of illegally harvested timber. In 2021, additional sanctions were introduced that further restricted its availability, extending the ban to the USA as part of broader efforts to curb deforestation and human rights violations linked to the Myanmar timber trade.

That same year, the Council of the European Union imposed targeted sanctions on Myanmar’s military regime, specifically restricting its ability to export timber that serve as key revenue sources for the junta. Despite these restrictions, Myanmar teak continues to be traded in countries that do not enforce such sanctions, including India, China, the UAE, Turkey, and Australia. Note, these restrictions may change at anytime.

WOOD WE WORK WITH

PLANTATION TEAK

Characteristics

Less dense than old-growth, natural teak.
Younger trees aged between 30-50 years.
Is resistant to insects and rot.

Merits

Despite the shorter and narrower planks, we can still get 20mm thickness and planks up to 2.2m. By using scarf joints or finger joints we can create 4m battens that are glued together. Shorter planks also reduce the purchase price.

CERTIFIED GREEN TEAK

Characteristics

Uses parts of 30-40 year-old trees that would normally be rejected due to knots and imperfections.
Sliced into thin veneers and glued together, to form a modified material with superior strength.
Lengths up to 4m and allows large widths due to laminations
Aesthetically attractive, with a plank like finish.
Excellent durability as the laminating process enhances its stability and dimensional integrity.
Is resistant to insects and rot.

Merits

The veneers are similar to the vertical grain of natural teak.
Yield about 85% of the log vs 2-15% of log for Vertical Grain
Renowned for its hardness, strength, and durability. A test panel currently on a yacht, had a 10kg scaffolding pole dropped onto it, causing only a 2mm dent.
Limited susceptibility to cracking and warping, when cut and dried correctly.
Non-skid surfaces.
Extra insulation in hot and cold climates.
A well-maintained deck should last 15-20 years.

Concerns

It may have variations in color and texture due to differences in the wood grain and moisture content of individual layers.
Ensuring the quality and integrity of the bonding process is crucial, as poorly bonded laminations can lead to delamination, weakness, and structural issues over time.
While lamination can improve the stability of green teak, the overall durability and longevity of green laminated teak may still be inferior to properly seasoned teak.
It still requires careful moisture management to prevent swelling, shrinkage, or damage over time, especially in environments with fluctuating humidity levels.
In some cases, the adhesives used in the lamination process contain chemicals.

ACCOYA

Characteristics

Certified sustainable fast-growing softwood “Radiata Pine” is its base material.
The wood is acetylated using acetic anhydride and water.
It makes the wood virtually unable to absorb water, expand and rot.

Merits

Extremely durable, they guarantee it will last 50 years for use above ground and 25 years for use below ground. The wood can be reused, recycled, or burned as biomass (fuel).
A great option for certain vessels such as catamarans.
Very low maintenance.

Concerns

The color is different to what the industry “expects”.
Its not as hard as teak, as it still has a lot of softwood.

Where to source it?

The Radiata Pine is harvested in New Zealand and shipped to the Netherlands for the modification process.

TMT MARINE LIGHT

Characteristics

Significantly cooler than teak.
Much lighter than teak.
Similar abrasion resistance as natural teak.

Merits

Very dimensionally stable. Resistant to shrinking and swelling due to humidity, temperature, and moisture content.
Resistant to decay and insects.
Large logs that produce long, wide boards with tight, vertical grain.
Can be used for interior applications, accepts stains and finishes.
Fast-growing, sustainable species.
Durable, slip resistant surface that is excellent for marine conditions.

Concerns

Much lighter in color, almost white before weathering.
Soft wood that needs to be carefully sanded to remove scratch marks.
Limited availability.
Prone to splitting, chipping, and splintering requiring high quality tools and sharp blades when working.

WOOD WE DON'T WORK WITH

THERMALLY MODIFIED WOODS

AMERICAN HARD MAPLE

Characteristics

Specifically created for the marine industry
Thermally modified by a controlled pyrolysis process of the wood being heated to (> 180 °C) in an oxygen free atmosphere. This process changes to the chemical structures of wood's cell wall components; lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose which increases its durability.

Merits

No chemicals are used during the modification process.
It looks like teak.
It weathers to grey in the same way as teak.
Claims a zero-carbon footprint.

Cracking.
The color of thermally modified maple can vary depending on the specific treatment process and wood source, which may affect its suitability for certain design schemes.

As 2024 drew to a close, illegal teak dominated headlines across yachting industry media, highlighting growing scrutiny of regulatory compliance in relation to the importation of Myanmar teak in violation of EUTR and UK timber regulations. This development intensified concerns about non-compliance with the European Timber Regulation (EUTR), spotlighting the challenges the industry faces in ensuring sustainable and legal timber sourcing.

Furthermore, the broader and more stringent EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation) is set to be implemented by 30 December 2025 for large companies and 30 June 2026 for micro- and small companies. Under the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), a large company is defined as one that meets at least two of the following criteria: more than 250 employees, an annual turnover exceeding €50 million, or an annual balance sheet total exceeding €43 million. In contrast, a small company is defined as one with fewer than 50 employees and either an annual turnover or an annual balance sheet total not exceeding €10 million.

This will introduce a requirement for any operator or trader placing commodities on the EU market (or exporting from it) to prove they did not contribute to forest degradation or recently deforested land – including a requirement for companies to provide geolocation data down to a specific plot of land for each tree felled. With all of this in mind, it can feel like there is more to navigate than ever where sourcing teak is concerned.

As of December 1, 2024, phase VII of the U.S. Lacey Act is now in effect, adding new compliance requirements for importers, which include yachts. Understanding and complying with new regulations can be challenging, and this guide is designed to help yacht brokers and importers navigate these updates, which emphasize the need for detailed declarations concerning wood products used in yacht construction, such as teak decks and mahogany cabinetry.

The Animal and Plant Health and Inspection Service (APHIS), a division of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), has implemented Phase VII of the US Lacey Act. This phase encompasses a wide range of materials and plant products, including but not limited to:

Furniture
Cork
Some essential oils

Importers who deal with these products must prepare to file declarations if they have not done so already. APHIS has emphasized the importance of understanding one’s supply chain and being aware of the specific information required for filing a declaration.

U.S. yacht brokers importing vessels that contain wood components (such as decks, cabinets, or console trims) must file a Lacey Act declaration if those wood parts are made from species covered under the act. This includes common materials used in yacht construction, such as teak, mahogany, and other hardwoods. The declaration is necessary to confirm that the wood was harvested legally and complies with both U.S regulations and the laws of the country of origin.

The relevant phase concerning this rule falls under Title II - Plant Protection, which specifically addresses declarations related to plants and plant products. Amendments made to the Lacey Act in 2008 significantly broadened the scope, by requiring declarations for all imported wood products regardless of their source or end use.

Key points to consider:

If a yacht has components like a teak deck, wooden cabinetry, real wood console trim etc., filing a declaration is mandatory.
The declaration must include information about the species of wood used, its country of origin, and any relevant permits or documentation demonstrating legal harvesting.

A typical Lacey Act declaration for a yacht broker importing a yacht with wood components includes the following information:

Importer Information : The name and address of the yacht broker.
Product Description : A detailed description of the yacht, including its make, model, and year of manufacture.

How to use FFE-200 Marine Epoxy for Fairing

Teakdecking Systems’ FFE-200 Marine Epoxy is well-known for securely bonding modular teak decking systems to large and small vessels. The product’s secondary purpose – fairing – is a secret worth discovering. This article shows how to use FFE-200 Marine Epoxy for fairing.

Generally, an epoxy adhesive and an epoxy fairing compound should not be found in the same pair of plastic tubs. Epoxy adhesives typically cure to a very hard surface, while fairing compounds are much softer (to create a surface that is easy to fair with sanding). The fillers used in fairing compounds reduce the epoxy’s adhesive strength, normally making the compound unsuitable as an adhesive.

However, Teakdecking Systems developed a unique and proprietary formulation product that blends the two functions of bonding and fairing.

NOTE: FFE-200 is now a brownish color, due to customers’ requests.

Tips from a local Sarasota sailor who has faired a lot of large and small surfaces:

The simple 1:1 mix ratio is accurate and fast compared to a full kit (base + hardener) of a commercial fairing compound or resin system because of its unequal mix ratio.
FFE-200 can be spread easily over large surfaces during deck installations used as a leveling compound to fair the structural deck before teak deck installation. The ‘out of the can’ consistency is perfect for filling pinholes and slight depressions on surfaces.
The FFE-200 Base Resin and Activator are degassed well by TDS, so there is no entrapped air in the cured compound when thoroughly* mixed. Few pinholes appear as the surface is sanded. Painters appreciate pinhole-free faired surfaces.

*Fun Fact about Mixing – When mixing polyester resin and its catalyst MEKP (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide), the catalyst starts a chain reaction within the resin, like the match that starts the fire. However, when mixing epoxies, Activator molecules are linked with the Base Resin molecules. For effective results, thoroughly mix the Base Resin with the Activator, so they link up. During mixing, be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing container to avoid leaving un-mixed components around the edges.

To illustrate how FFE-200 can work for vessels big and small, a recently completed project is a rudder for a small performance sailboat.

The rudder has two issues – the leading edge was too blunt, and the two sides were not symmetrical, causing the boat to pull to one side. Here, the leading edge has already been corrected with FFE-200 over a core of glass strands. The curve on the contour gauge is the shape of the other side of the rudder. For a small rudder, that gap between the contour gauge and the surface represents a lot of side-to-side difference.

To fill that gap, plus a bit more for fairing, FFE-200 was used.

The rudder was cross-sanded up through the grits with a 9” sanding block. The sanding block or longboard size should be proportional to the size and shape of the faired surface – bigger is better, but harder to handle.

The contour gauge in the next photo shows that the port and starboard sides of the rudder now match.

Application Techniques for Gray & White Caulking

Modern Sailing Deck with Gray Caulking

Gray and white caulking for boat decks is growing in popularity, and we address the additional considerations for the installation and maintenance of these products, as compared to black caulking.

Teakdecking Systems SIS 440 Teak Deck Caulking in white and gray offer the same performance results as black caulking. However, different pigmentation formulas for these light colors make it necessary to adapt procedures for installation, cure time, sanding, and general maintenance. The light-colored caulk is not as “forgiving” as black caulk and requires more care from technicians during installation, as well as more maintenance during use.

NOTE: Throughout this article, special comments related to gray and white caulking are in bold.

IMPORTANT: The following information is supplemental and does not replace the SIS 440 instructions on the cartridge or foil “sausage” packaging. Read and follow all packaging instructions.

Gray & White Caulking Guidelines

Be sure to work under a cover when possible. Otherwise, only open the length of seams that can be cleaned and re-caulked on the same day.

PREPARATION FOR NEW SEAMS

Proper Seam Preparation is Critical for Caulk Adhesion

1) Sand the open seam. Perform the sanding with a TDS Seam Sander or a similar tool to prep the wood for effective caulk bonding. This step will fair the wood surface, and it will remove the smoothness created by saw “polishing.” The goal is to create a fresh wood surface.

2) Clean & De-Oil. After the wood is prepped by sanding, use a vacuum or air blower to remove sawdust or other contaminants. Teak is naturally oily, so it must be de-oiled for strong bonding to caulk. Perform this by carefully cleaning with acetone saturated lint-free clean cotton rags. Not only does this step remove oil, but it also removes any remaining contaminants in the seams.

Remaining contaminants may show in the cured white and gray marine caulking but are not as noticeable in black caulk.

PREPARATION FOR RE-SEAMING

Fully remove old residue for proper adhesion of caulk. Accomplish this most effectively with a seam saw or router. ATTENTION: Expose fresh wood on butt joints by cutting them or scratching the wood surface with a reefing hook . These joints are most susceptible to inadequate prep and caulk filling.

Note for Bedding Compounds:

Residue may be present on a new deck if installed on bedding material. Remove all this residue and follow steps 1 and 2 for “new seams” (above).

Seam Prep: After removing all residue from the new or re-seamed deck, continue with the same instructions for new seams: sand, clean, and de-oil before beginning to fill seams with caulking. Failure to take these steps may cause seam failure.

IMPORTANT: Seam Moisture Content must be 12% or less in surrounding wood. Do not caulk wet seams. This requirement is often overlooked and will cause seam failure. Initial bonding may be achieved, but as the wood dries it will stretch the caulking and the weakest bonds will break. Flexible one-component bedding compounds exacerbate this condition.

CAUTION: Do not use wood primers intended for other caulk products. This will prevent adhesion of the TDS product, void the product warranty, and may cause staining within the cured caulking.

FILLING THE SEAMS WITH GRAY AND WHITE CAULKING

1) Nozzle Prep. To facilitate filling, cut the tip of the nozzle on an angle, puncture foil seal, then squeeze tip with pliers so nozzle fits into the seam.

2) Filling Seams . Fill from the bottom up and slightly overfill. Then spoon to press caulk into seams. Caulk should be proud of the deck surface by 1 to 2 mm after spooning. Let the caulking cure. If caulking cures below the level of the deck surface it may trap contaminants within the caulk. NOTE: Make sure butt joints are completely filled and void-free; this intersection is most susceptible to improper filling and bonding.

CURE TIME AND SANDING FOR GRAY AND WHITE CAULKING

Cure time is a function of (1) cross-sectional dimensions of the seam and (2) ambient temperature and humidity of the work area. Conditions of cold or very dry air lengthen cure time. Generally, the caulking cures from the top down at a rate of about 1 to 2 millimeters per day. A seam of ¼” (6.4mm) in normal conditions (~74°F/23°C at 50% relative humidity) will be ready for sanding in 8 to 12 days. For large seams (¼”-¾” or 6.4-19.2mm) or in colder, dryer conditions, allow curing for a minimum of 12 days.

Remember: Deeper seams require more curing time.

When using white and gray marine caulking, allow additional curing time if the situation permits.

Shrinking and separation

If caulking is not fully cured and prematurely sanded, then shrinkage, deformation, and ‘dragging’ or wrinkling of the caulk surface may occur. This action may also cause premature seam failure. Uncured caulking will absorb the sanding dust as well as other contaminants, causing discoloration and potential compromising of the seam.

If excess caulking is cut away, wait one day before sanding. Freshly cut caulking needs to “oxidize” with outside air so the surface toughens. This helps to create a smooth surface and will be easier to clean. This is especially beneficial for white and gray caulk seams.

When sanding white and gray caulk seams, it is helpful to start with 80 grit and then ‘finish sand’ with 100 or 120 grit sandpaper. This ‘fine sanding’ helps to smooth the caulk and will assist in preventing contaminants from accumulating in the small crevices.

A split seam is another problem with inadequate curing time. When panels (with uncured caulk) are moved before installation, the boards often flex causing a split in the seam’s center.

After-Care Suggestions for Gray & White Caulking

MAINTENANCE

Light-colored deck caulking is similar to other light-colored accessories such as boat cushions and upholstery. Therefore , dirt and contaminants will show more and require more maintenance.

Caulk is a flexible material and seams may raise and lower depending upon the moisture content of the teak. If seams remain high (relative to deck surface level) for more than six months, it may be necessary to sand or cut the seams to plank level. Further, walking on proud seams creates pressure and may cause damage too.

Evaluate the deck periodically and lightly sand to maintain a good appearance and extend its life. Do not power-wash teak decks.

CLEANING

1) NORMAL CLEANING

Use TDS ECO-100 (Powder) and ECO-300 (Liquid) Teak Cleaners , designed to be used as often as desired. They are both U.S. Clean Marina and MARPOL compliant for safe discharge into any waterway or marina. When possible, use these cleaners with medium grit scrubbing pads (e.g., Scotchbrite-type “red” medium grit). These are very effective and will help to smooth the deck.

Clean problematic stains such as diesel, wine, fish blood, etc. immediately with the ECO-100 or ECO-300 Teak Cleaners . If this is not possible, then spot cleaners such as K2R Marine Cleaner and Dawn dish soap can be effective.

2) Stubborn Stains

A light sanding of the seam with 80 grit sandpaper may remove the stain(s). In order to achieve best results, finish the seam with 100 or 120 grit sandpaper to ensure a smoother finish on the caulk surface.

Teak releases oil naturally, therefore discoloring white and gray caulk . This teak oil is most prominent on new decks and fortunately , it diminishes as the teak ages. In addition, other oils, sealers, and coatings are likely to show more against light-colored caulk too. Dirt, soot, or oily stains left on a deck for an extended time may leach into the caulking and cause staining and discoloration. Note: Varnish will NOT adhere properly to SIS 440 Teak Deck Caulking.

REPAIR

For particularly stubborn stains that are not removable or for gouged/damaged caulk, a repair is easy to make. Cut out a small amount of caulk in a “V” shape and wipe with a clean lint-free rag soaked in acetone. Then, tape and re-caulk the area with SIS 440 Teak Deck Caulking. It will adhere strongly to the old SIS 440 Teak Deck Caulking, making it impossible to separate the old and new caulk areas once cured. In order to help blend the color, lightly sand the repaired area after curing, or wait. Eventually, repairs will be almost impossible to see.

Composite Decking – “Wood” You Know the Difference?

Teak is the marine industry “gold standard” for flooring and cabinetry. However, technology and material improvements in composite materials are causing builders and informed customers to look at these teak-alternatives. The numerous “faux teak” materials on the market include EVA, PVC, and polyurethane. Considered an authority, Teakdecking Systems can eliminate confusion by explaining these material differences and offering their preferred product.

Composite Decking with Teak Look

The Teak Standard

Teak is stable, anti-slip, does not warp or rot, nor attracts insects or moisture. It is an insulator, so even heat from the sun dissipates underfoot. Teak is also sustainable when properly sourced. For example, TDS procures legally-source wood from Southeast Asia, where sustainability efforts are underway. Natural wood has a distinct advantage over petroleum-based, non-recyclable products. The latter can be less durable and very hot—especially in darker colors.

Flooring must be able to expand and contract with the boat. Great applications for composite materials include large spaces, commercial vessels, or retrofits.”

COMPARING COMPOSITE DECKING MATERIALS

EVA (ETHYLENE-VINYL ACETATE/POLYETHYLENE )

EVA an elastic, closed-cell foam, is known for its rubbery softness. The sheets are cut to fit and its adhesive backing holds it to the floor. EVA’s stability and durability, however, can be compromised by extreme marine elements of sun and moisture—especially in larger-sized boats. While EVA flooring is cushioned and comfortable to bare feet, it often pulls up on the corners and is less durable than harder surfaced decks.

PVC (POLYVINYL CHLORIDE )

PVC comes in strip planks, heat welded together, that are cut, fit, and finished for labor-intensive installation. PVC doesn’t warp or splinter like real wood and it is durable. But in the marine environment, it has been known to lose color and since it is welded together, welds have been known to separate. Though it is UV resistant to a point, it has a thin profile and can show any deck imperfections, and it does not stand up to regular maintenance or sanding. Since PVC is usually installed with butt joints, it lacks the integrity of the more detailed and time-consuming finger joints (in which TDS takes pride).

While using a product like EVA or PVC may save up to 25% of the cost, TDS maintains that the customers receive greater value and longevity, using higher-quality polyurethane (especially on large boats).

POLYURETHANE

Polyurethane decking is preferred by TDS because it is durable and can be assembled in long lengths, using finger joints, and the exact-fit template is installed like the company’s signature teak, in pre-fit, digitized panels. TDS uses polyurethane brands Esthec and TDS CompositeDeck because they can be cut into any customized shape on a CNC machine and placed on a deck that receives high traffic, like a helipad, tender garage, or yacht beach clubs. These materials are highly durable, water- and UV-resistant, and repairable.

Composite decking requires less maintenance

PROPERTIES

Stains – All composites, like teak, can be stained by oils or red wine.

Sanding – Polyurethane flooring is thick. It can be sanded to open the pores, washed with mild soap and water, and even lightly pressure washed to maintain its finish. Polyurethane is repairable, and the colors “weather” making repairs nearly unnoticeable. Lighter colors like “biscuit” are preferable to darker “honey” colors that may look like oiled teak because they are cooler underfoot.

“Some manufacturers were using cheaper materials, but for the more knowledgeable customer, they changed to the more expensive product, rather than replace it in 2-3 years,” says Brosilow. “Saltwater exposure makes the edges break away as they get ‘crispy’ and the flooring peels, contrasting with polyurethane which can last up to 20 years.”

IT’S NOT JUST THE WHAT–IT’S THE HOW.

With 40 years of experience, TDS has learned how to properly install decks. This is as important as the decking material itself. For example, TDS addresses the typical gelcoat line from the boat mold. Most installers just lay decking over the depression from the mold, using acetone to remove the wax but not modifying the surface. TDS sands the gelcoat surface to ensure a solid bond. TDS has applied commercial-grade polyurethane to large custom flooring applications, and also manufactured custom parts like cap rails, covering boards, and steps.

EVA and PVC are good, cost-effective choices for small vessels. But for the optimal UV and water-resistance, polyurethane is the better choice, especially on large boats because it is chemically resistant, durable, and repairable.

Teak Thickness

In the design of many vintage vessels, thick teak boards were fastened directly to the frames which added structural soundness to the entire vessel. Today, modern construction methods have made the role of teak as a structural component uncommon.

Now, teak is primarily a covering to the boat’s structural subdeck. New teak decks are typically only 10 to 20 mm (3/8 to 3/4”) thick. Therefore, less wood is needed for decking.

Wear Rate

A teak deck typically wears away at an approximate rate of 0.5 to 1 mm of thickness per year in service. This wear rate can vary based on the following:

Wood quality and grain orientation
Usage
UV degradation
Atmospheric conditions
Quality of deck assembly and installation
MOST IMPORTANT – Quality of maintenance

When applying the typical 0.5 to 1mm rate of loss to a deck that is initially 10-20 mm thick, the expected useful service life will be 10 to 20 years. However, this range depends on the previously mentioned wear factors.

Wood Grain

Quality teak decking will be assembled with vertical grain planks, which are planks with the grain running less than 45° of vertical when viewing the end of the plank.

Examine the annual growth rings have a pattern which alternates as light and dark (soft or hard wood). The widths of these teak rings are determined by the growing season. For deck use, this grain pattern should be “tight” or closely spaced. This means there is less soft wood.

Teak decking with tight vertical grain boards wear much better than those with wide grain or flat-sawn planks. So, a quality teak deck built with planks containing a tighter grain pattern (i.e., less soft wood) will have increased longevity.

Wood Condition

When the surface of a teak deck is badly weathered or ridged, it holds moisture and surface contaminants. This prevents proper cleaning and maintenance of the deck. A teak deck in this condition can be corrected by lightly sanding the deck to remove the ridges (if there is still enough teak thickness to make it worthwhile). As a reminder, check the depth of caulk seams and the thickness of the teak before starting.

NOTE: Periodic light sanding will keep the deck surface relatively smooth and easy to clean.

IMPORTANT

The use of “two-part” or acid cleaners is not recommended. They can damage the teak and caulk seams.
Never use a pressure washer or stiff bristle brush for cleaning teak. These tools can remove the soft grain in the teak and shorten the life of the deck.

Bungs

Teak “bungs” or plugs cover the deck fasteners. If any bungs are missing look into the bung hole(s) to see how far below the surface the screw head is located. This an indicator of how much the teak has worn.

If an isolated bung is missing on a deck that is in good shape but old and thinner, it is possible to replace the bung. (Remove the screw, bore the bung hole deeper for more bonding surface, leave the screw out for more clearance, seal the screw hole, and then replace the bung.)

In some cases, the teak is fastened to the boat with screws from underneath the deck. Unfortunately, as the teak surface wears, the sharp points of the screws are exposed. Once exposed, the screw tips will damage bare feet, shoes and clothing, sails and rigging. It is not possible to grind the screw points without damaging the surrounding teak. In this case, the only fix is to remove and replace the teak deck.

Wood Color

Teak is golden brown when first milled. Then, it naturally develops a silvery patina. This color is natural and does not mean the condition is bad.

Many boat owners like the silver patina. However, those who do not like the color will sand the teak deck to restore it to the original golden brown color. After sanding, the teak will be like new. Frequent sanding accelerates the reduction in thickness and decreases the deck’s life .

A healthy teak deck has a light silver color and clean wood. If the deck is gray, the deck needs to be cleaned with a “one-part” non-acid teak cleaner.

Sealing Teak

Since teak is an organic material it weathers over time. Oxidation causes the silver patina. This is a natural process and does not hurt the teak. However, some teak deck owners attempt to retard this process by applying various sealers or oils.

Sealing is minimally effective in the short term. Further, it increases maintenance, traps contaminants, and possibly promotes mildew growth in wet climates. This will necessitate harsh cleaning or sanding to eliminate build-up and require subsequent sealing. Most boat owners prefer to leave teak unfinished.

How to Inspect Teak Deck Caulking & Seams

Teak deck caulking and seam condition is a critical indicator of a boat deck’s quality. Inspecting the caulking and seams can determine the overall deck condition, teak deck thickness, and remaining life of the deck.

MISSING OR DETACHED CAULKING

On a dry deck, examine the seams between the planks to look for missing or detached caulking. If no caulk seam failures are visible, wet the boat deck. As the deck dries, look for areas along the edges of the caulk seams that stay wet longer than the surrounding teak. This is where caulk failures may exist.

VARYING SEAM WIDTH

For quality teak decking caulking, the width of caulk seams will not vary along the length of the seam. If the seam widths vary, the deck was either poorly laid, or the seams have been re-cut and re-seamed. A boat deck in this condition may be in the last third of its life.

CAULKING CONDITION

Cracked or hard caulk cannot flex as the teak expands and contracts. This may result in leaks. The only solution is to remove the old caulk and re-caulk the seams if there is enough seam depth available.

TEAK CONDITION

Where caulking is visibly separated from the teak or missing, look at the edges of the teak where the caulking should be bonded. If the teak edges of the seams are very thin relative to the width of the seam, there is no longer enough bonding surface for new caulking to stay attached.

If the teak surface is ridged, it will need to be sanded. It is possible the sanding will reduce the thickness so there may not be enough viable edging for re-caulking.

DETERMINING TEAK THICKNESS

When inspecting teak thickness, be aware that it will not be the same everywhere. Typically, bows, sun decks, uncovered aft decks, and swim platforms wear faster due to more sun, sea, and human activity.

HATCHES

The deck’s current thickness often can be determined by simply opening hatches and looking at the edges of the hatches and the deck surrounding the hatch.

MEASURE CAULK SEAM DEPTH

A slightly more invasive measuring procedure is to (1) slide the tip of a penknife or ice pick into a caulking seam until it bottoms out, (2) mark the deck surface with your thumbnail, and (3) withdraw the pen or pick to see the depth.

RABBETED DECKS – CAUTION NEEDED TO MEASURE

In traditionally laid teak decks, one or both edges of the planks can be rabbeted. A rabbet is a notch, usually square, cut into the edge of a board. Rabbets create the space for the caulking while leaving the bottom of the plank full width to serve as a spacer for the caulk seam.

When using the penknife or ice pick procedure to check the thickness of a traditionally laid teak deck, it is necessary to know where the edges of the two planks meet under the caulking – in the center or along one edge of the seam. This enables proper placement of the blade or a pick to reach the bottom of the deck, between the planks.

If there is sufficient teak thickness in a rabbeted deck, the existing caulk seams can be cut deeper to create the proper bonding surfaces and then be re-caulked, thereby saving the deck for several more years. Sometimes, the downside is that the process of cutting the seams deeper is not as accurate as of the original machining of the wood. As a result, once caulked and sanded, the seams will vary slightly in width and not be as crisp as the original ones.

The cost to reseam a teak deck is lower than buying a new teak deck. Often, it is one-third to one-half the cost of a new teak deck.

BEST TIPS FOR EXTENDING DECK’S LIFE

Hopefully, the inspection of teak deck caulking will reveal little more than the need for some love and attention. To extend the deck’s life and push off the eventual replacement as long as possible, it is imperative to keep the deck fully sealed from water intrusion. Trapped water under the deck planks can cause deck delamination from beneath. It can also leak into the structural sub-deck (and possibly interior) through hardware fastener holes. For these reasons, it is important to replace any missing bungs and reseal any caulk seams with damage. If the deck cannot be properly sealed after these steps, a deck replacement is necessary.

A careful survey of a teak decking (and caulk and seams) by an expert can provide the best information about teak decking condition. This can help to determine if a deck should be repaired or replaced.

How to Compare Teak and Composite Decking

Teakdecking Systems (TDS) offers legally sourced superyacht-quality Southeast Asian teak and high-end polyurethane composite decking . Boat owners often ask us how to compare teak and composite decking. Rarely is there one factor alone to consider. All these must be weighed: appearance, durability, maintenance, safety, cost, installation, deck weight, environmental impact, and surface temperature. Here, we look at each factor to compare teak and composite decking.

APPEARANCE

TEAK is traditional, classic, and timeless. It has a “warm” feeling, especially when it is new or after sanding. Sunlight ages it to a silvery patina. Superyacht quality teak has tight grain quarter-sawn teak from old-growth Burmese logs and is highly durable. So, many consider it a status symbol. Some enthusiasts even consider it “obligatory” for wooden boats.

COMPOSITE decking provides freedom of design to create unique decking—contemporary or traditional . The color and texture can be customized, and the color stays true for an extended time. Unlike teak, butt joints are not necessary. Like teak, it does not absorb water.

DURABILITY

TEAK is exceptionally durable and can last 15-20 years or longer with proper care. See our blog on “How to Extend the Life of a Teak Deck” . Its wear is dependent upon usage and desired look (or sanding frequency). Teak is rot-resistant; its natural oils fight water penetration, as well as algae and mold. Red wine or fish blood can and will stain teak, but can easily be removed. Sunscreen and potato chip oil will penetrate the wood (and can stain too). TDS Sealer and Protector can safeguard the surface. Soiled or damaged teak battens or trim boards can be sanded, repaired, or replaced.

COMPOSITE decks can last 20 years or more. This is achieved with well-installed, properly maintained, high-quality materials, such as the polyurethane of TDS Composite Decking . These materials resist shrinkage and adhesive failure when installed properly. In contrast, lower quality composite decks (EVA and PVC materials) can last as few as three to five years.

Properties vary by material type. In general, composite materials are stainproof from many fluids, but not red wine and fish blood. Quite often, the decking discolors (fades) over time even though some materials have UV inhibitors to reduce the effects. Some inferior composite materials will shrink, and adhesive failures can occur. Repairs and refits typically require trained professionals.

MAINTENANCE

TEAK is gently cleaned by scrubbing across the grain with a medium scrubbing pad (3M “red”) and a one-part cleaner (ECO-100 & ECO-300) . For more aggressive restoration, a sand-out may be needed. NOTE: Power washing or vigorous chemical cleaning (two-part cleaners) removes softwood, leaving hard ridges that hold dirt and contaminants. Harsh cleaning methods can also harm the surrounding gel coat or paint and stainless steel.

COMPOSITE is easy to clean with water, soap, or by power washing. Skin oils or scuffs show immediately on some light-colored materials but are cleanable.

SAFETY

TEAK is a natural, non-skid surface, wet or dry, and COMPOSITE materials have the same properties.

COST

TEAK supply of legally sourced old-growth trees is diminishing; timber costs are steadily increasing. So it is tempting to consider lower-priced plantation teak as an alternative. This is not recommended since it is less durable (more softwood) and the much wider grain gives in an aesthetically unsuitable appearance. If well-maintained, teak will significantly enhance a vessel’s resale value.

COMPOSITE materials are 30-50% less expensive than teak, according to many industry publications. However, quality can vary widely depending on the manufacturer. Installation costs vary too. High-end materials with professional installations can be priced slightly less than teak.

INSTALLATION

TEAK decks can be installed by a moderately skilled carpenter for most projects. TDS or a qualified boatyard should install more complex projects (e.g., lots of trim and hatches). This is especially true when performing fastenless installations, i.e., vacuum bagging and barring. Some small areas can be DIY. Repairs to teak can require the replacement of batten(s) or margin trim.

COMPOSITE is best installed by a moderately skilled carpenter. The fairing of the subdeck must be virtually perfect for the thin panels (e.g., 6mm). Improper installation can cause “bubbling” by adhesive gassing or trapped air. This problem occurs when cure times are not met, or when the “down” pressure is removed too soon.

Note for DIY: Achieve the best results by having the manufacturer pre-cut the decking panels to address the many styling details. Understandably, the best areas for DIY are small, like an interior sole or footrest. Some materials are “peel and stick.” As previously mentioned, a replacement may be needed in 3 to 5 years from installation.

DECK WEIGHT

TEAK weight varies with the thickness; the most common thickness is 14mm with an estimated weight of 2.2 lbs/sq. ft (10.7 kg/sq m). For a slight weight reduction, the teak thickness can be reduced to 10mm or 12mm.

COMPOSITE weights vary by product type (EVA, PVC, etc.); however, most are lighter than teak.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

TEAK must be legally-sourced from sustainable forests. (Note: TDS timber is 50+ years old.) The use of elephants for harvesting and transporting logs helps protect endangered species. It also aids new growth teak, with less impact on the land. 90% of a cut teak tree is used in multiple industries for decking, furniture, windows, doors, etc. Teak is renewable and recyclable.

COMPOSITE decking may have oils and chorine used in its production, and hazardous by-products are produced. Some materials are not recyclable and not as “green” as desired. It is best to check with the product manufacturer for more information.

TEMPERATURE

TEAK has the coolest surface, in general. The R-value (insulation) and sound suppression are very good. Further, below deck temperatures are more stable due to teak’s insulation properties.

COMPOSITE PVC decks can get as hot as 150°F (65.5°C). Lighter-colored materials have the coolest temperatures, and darker colors can become too hot for bare feet. (TDS firmly recommends light colors.) The lowest density material will have the lowest heat. Composite decking will cool when wet.

SUMMARY

How to Recaulk Seams

“I’d rather burn my boat to the waterline before I recaulk seams again,” a boat owner said to our Sales Manager at a recent boat show.

Then the boat owner laughed and said, “Of course, my family and I love the Hylas 54 too much to do this. But I sure did have some frustrations, largely my fault. It was my first recaulking job, and it was a big one with nearly one mile of seams.”

At TDS, we understand that it’s a big job. An aging teak deck can have proud caulking. Scuffing a foot on the deck could loosen the caulk. Or tugging on the caulking will easily pull it up. Additionally, if caulk has separated from the teak planking, it will eventually loosen if not repaired. These gaps will trap water and potentially cause damage.

We have perfected the art of caulking and want to share advice to prevent frustrations like those of the owner at the boat show. Here, we provide some time-tested tips, and if you call us, we will walk you through the process. We want your re-seaming project to be a success.

SIS 440 Caulking, a proprietary formulation, expands and contracts with boat movement and temperature changes. Caulk is designed to do this.

Teak naturally wears 0.25 to 0.5 mm/year, which will cause the caulking to become “proud.” So, it is essential to watch the deck as it ages and to perform a light sanding for periodic maintenance. This sanding will remove the proud caulk and keep the teak surface smooth. A smooth teak surface prevents trapping dirt.

BEFORE STARTING TO RECAULK SEAMS TAKE THESE NECESSARY STEPS

1) DETERMINE THE DEPTH OF THE SEAM

Seams should have a depth of 5/16 to 1/2” (8-12 mm)* for recaulking to be successful (and cost-effective). Do not fill shallow seams because there could be adhesion problems.

*Seams sizes could vary with larger and thicker planks.

2) CHOOSE THE BEST LOCATION FOR TO RECAULK SEAMS

Always work under a cover. Ideally indoors for protection from rain or snow. Indoor temperature control will enhance caulk cure time. Ideally, the temperature should be 40-90°F or 5-33°C. If unable to work under a cover, only open as much seam as can be cleaned and recaulked on the same day.

3) SAND THE DECK

Before beginning to recaulk seams, a light sanding of the deck creates a smooth surface so that caulking does not fill any ridges in the teak. This pre-sanding will make the final sanding (after re-caulking) much easier, saving time.

4) REMOVE HARDWARE

Since sanding is required before and after recaulking, the hardware will rest on proud teak if it is not removed.

5) READ THE APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS ON THE CAULK PACKAGING

Instructions are carefully written to help users (with SIS 440).

REMOVING OLD CAULKING

Remove ALL caulk to prepare clean seams of fresh wood for new caulk. For small jobs, remove caulk with a razor and reefing hook.

For large jobs, electric tools are better. A Fein tool with a teak caulk removal blade works well. For experienced users, a saw or router can be used.

Regardless of the tool, work carefully to not gouge the edges of the seams. Then, the seams MUST be sanded, vacuumed, and cleaned with acetone. Fresh, clean wood ensures optimal adhesion.

BOND BREAKER TAPE IN SEAMS

Place bond breaker tape at the bottom of the seam. The tape prevents an adhesive bond of the caulking to the bottom of the seam, allowing movement during caulk expansion and contraction.

FILLING THE SEAMS

The temperature must be at least 40°F (5°C) when caulking. Fill seams with a manual gun, electric gun, or pneumatic gun. Regardless of the gun type, cartridge tip preparation is the same.

Cut the tip of the cartridge at an angle. Then insert a screwdriver to puncture the foil lining. After completing this, squeeze the tip to flatten it. This will help to align the tip with the seam. NOTE: Fully open the tip and foil, or caulk may push out from the back of the cartridge.

Begin application and ensure caulking goes to the bottom of the seam, allowing it to flow upward until crowning above the top of the seam. Smoothly pull the gun along the seam toward the applicator. Avoid starts and stops or changes in direction that may entrap air.

If using a pneumatic caulk gun, do not exceed 80 psi to prevent overriding the plunger and injection air into the caulk.

Immediately after applying the caulking, draw a flexible putty knife over the seam. Apply enough pressure to make sure caulk fills to the bottom of the seam, and then crowns to allow for slight settling. Make sure the seams have no entrapped air after application. Do not disturb the caulking until fully cured.

Apply pressure to fill seam. Be sure that caulking crowns.

Masking the teak before caulking may be done. Place tape 1 mm from the edge of the seam. Note: It will require more pressure to fill the seam with the putty knife with a masked edge.

CURING

Cure time is a function of the cross-sectional dimension of the seam and ambient temperature and humidity. Cold or very dry air will increase the cure time. Caulking cures from the top down at a rate of about 1-2 mm/day with a maximum rate of 3mm/day. Allow at least 48 hours. SANDING AND FINISHING

Sand using 80-100 grit sandpaper with a soft pad on a grinder. Do not use orbital and belts sanders because they may “dig” into the teak. A Fein tool with a sanding pad is good for the corners. Hand-sanding is required for details that cannot be reached with power tools. Rich brown teak and razor-sharp seams appear as the caulking is sanded away.

If there are gaps, bubbles, or under-filled seams, it is due to improper caulking. The seams were not filled properly or did not cure adequately.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN TEAK DECK INSTALLS OR REPLACEMENTS

Your beautiful teak deck is showing signs of wear. To scrub, oil, sand, or not? These questions haunt all yacht owners who opted to invest in the durability and beauty of natural teak. But while you or your crew have done all you can, it’s time to call on professionals who can repair or replace the teak and bring it back to its former luster.

The tell-tale signs of wearing teak can include delamination or voids under the deck, cracked battens where the teak meets vertical surfaces, caulking shrinkage, oil spots, water infiltration, thinning of the surface, or just “tired” looking wood.

While looking for a professional to handle the job, Teakdecking Systems, a leader in teak deck fabrication and installation for over 40 years, recommends the following:

Consider This

Know the reputation of the company you choose. A quick online search can show reviews, ratings, or input from fellow yacht owners. Learn from their experience!
Know the quality of the materials the company uses. Plantation, or fast-growing teak, does not have the tight rings of seasoned, long-term old-growth teak, which is stronger, less permeable, and longer-lasting than the cheaper alternative.
Look at projects the company has done, and the workload currently scheduled. Your job could be put in a long queue, and your boat could be out of commission or charter for longer than expected.
Choose a reputable yard and have the work done there so other projects can be scheduled simultaneously. Such cooperative work with various subcontractors will help you get your jobs done more efficiently.
Prepare the job properly: Ensure the area is clean, accessible, safe, and done in a water-tight environment. Water is the enemy when replacing a teak deck—another good reason to choose a yard with covered space.
Important: Check to see if the company you choose has legal teak in their possession or if they are buying your teak when you place your order.

Approximately 400 sqft, both lower and upper decks needed to be replaced due to water damage. The crew emphasized the importance of ensuring the integrity of the subdeck and preparing the area for work.

“Preparation is the most important part of the job,” says Sal Busacca, a 25-year TDS team member who is out in the field daily, supervising jobs and talking to clients—both repeat and new, educating them on the processes necessary to execute a successful installation or repair. Since people often ask about pricing, Busacca replied, “It all depends on the complexity of the project, what needs to be done and where it can be done, as well as conditions, and time frame. Getting Started

Like those at TDS, a good installation team is aware of the importance of preparing a fair, cleaned, and primed surface for the teak to be fastened to.

After the old teak deck has been removed, installers look for any problems, such as water intrusion, delamination, and corrosion on the vessel’s surface. If there is evidence of such, the areas need to be repaired. Once repaired, it may be necessary to have fairings installed to even the surface, so there are no low points for water to accumulate. This is often done on new and old boats, so the deck is perfectly even. On steel or aluminum vessels, the same process applies. Remember, metal needs to be primed before fairing.

Choosing the correct adhesive used during installation is one of the most important steps. TDS uses its flexible, proprietary two-part epoxy that ensures the adhesion of the subdeck and teak deck. The deck is then fastened using either a pressure bar or vacuum bag method. This step must be applied evenly so the adhesive can cure, and the teak can adequately adhere to the subdeck.

THE NITTY-GRITTY

Once the deck has been fastened to the vessel, it is time to caulk. TDS has even developed our own proprietary, UV, and chemical-resistant caulking. Because of these quality features, there is no need for priming, removing one step from the installation process, making TDS caulk a favorite for boat builders. We take great pride in showcasing its strength, durability, and flexibility on every installation.

Ideally, a pneumatic gun should be used to press the caulk into the bottom of the seams. Each seam is then spooned or tooled with a putty knife. After 5-7 days of curing, the deck is then ready to be sanded. It is important to note that the curing time is doubled with the newly popular white or gray caulking, as is the maintenance. First, the entire deck should be sanded with 36 grit to remove excess caulking, followed by 60 and 80 grit to enhance the look of your new deck.

Sanding a Teak Deck

Sanding a teak deck is part of a vessel’s maintenance program. So it’s essential to know why to sand, when not to sand, and how to sand.

WHY SAND A TEAK DECK?

The primary reason for sanding a teak deck relatively smooth is to allow moisture and contaminants to run off the decks rather than become entrapped on the deck surface.

Teak, like all woods, can decay. The softwood between the grain lines wears and deteriorates faster than the hardwood of the grain lines. Ridges trap rainwater and air pollutants in the valleys between the ridges rather than running cleanly off the deck. Note that when rubber caulking is proud on the teak deck surface, it can have the same effect. In the valleys, the decay process accelerates for softwood because it stays wet longer.

Another reason for sanding is to remove stains that are resistant to quality teak cleaners.

Before Sand-Out

WHEN NOT TO SAND

Sanding will make teak decks as smooth as possible within the limits of safe traction underfoot. But there are some cases where sanding is not the correct next step. Before starting a deck sanding project, the first two steps are to determine (1) the current thickness on the teak deck and (2) the remaining depth of the caulk seams. If the caulk seams are too shallow, the caulk will not stick to the sidewalls of the teak groove because there is not enough surface area to form a good bond. Sanding a deck with shallow seams will lead to caulk seam failures by further reducing seam wall surface area.

If the seams are shallow, but the deck is a traditionally laid deck with rabbeted seams, there may still be enough teak thickness below the seam to cut the seams deeper and then recaulk them before sanding the teak surface. If both the teak deck and caulk seams are thin, do not sand the teak deck because it has reached the end of its useful life. Sanding will only lead to more caulk seam failures. If this happens, contact the teak decking professionals at Teakdecking Systems to learn about deck replacement options.

HOW TO SAND

If there is enough teak thickness and caulk seam depth for a successful deck sand-out, an optional first step is to wash the deck with Teakdecking Systems’ ECO 100 or 300 Teak Cleaners , to create a dirt-free and pollution-free surface.

As the deck dries, inspect the deck for caulk seam failures. Wherever the edge of a plank stays wet after the surrounding deck has dried, this indicates a seam failure. Water has reached the side of the plank, saturating the wood more deeply. Another reason for lingering moisture may be that the caulking is proud on the teak. This creates a dam that prevents the water from running off the deck.

It might be impossible to determine whether the dampness is due to a seam failure or raised caulking. So, use a single-edged razor blade to shave the caulking down to deck level in that area and re-wet the deck. If the prior damp spot does not reappear, the problem was the elevated caulking. Sanding will remove the elevated caulking.

Proud Caulk — Determine if it needs to be cut down or replaced. Replacement is necessary if the caulking is loose or the seam holds water.

If seam failures appear, mark them with tape. Once the deck has thoroughly dried, make any necessary caulk seam repairs before the general deck sand out.

NOTE: Sanding removes raised caulking; so some technicians prefer to make repairs after sanding, but these repairs must be performed carefully to prevent damage to the newly sanded deck.

Sanding carefully and slowly are the keys to beautifying rather than destroying a teak deck.

TOOLS

VACUUM AND SANDERS

Sanding creates a lot of dust, so a shop vacuum is necessary. Dust attachments on the sanders will reduce the volume of loose dust resulting in a cleaner workspace (and fewer cold stares from the crews on neighboring boats). However, dust gathering is not as important as having the right tools for the job. So do not be lured into using the wrong sander because “it doesn’t make a mess.”

Belt sanders and orbital (jitterbug, palm, etc.) sanders should only be used on a teak deck by highly skilled professionals. Amateur users can easily catch an edge and gouge the teak or create unwanted grain patterns. Orbital sanders work well on the teak. BUT they will only wiggle the caulking rather than cutting it down to the deck surface.

The best sander(s) for resurfacing a teak deck are a 5-6” Dual Action (D/A) random orbital sander and/or a 7” grinder for larger projects. Equip both sanders with the yellow soft pads that accept either Stick-It or Hook-n-Loop sanding disks. These two types of sanders cut in a circular pattern removing caulking down to deck level. If the deck has many corners, a Fein Multimaster sander, or similar, may be helpful.

Use a hand sanding block or the final sanding because there will be edges that the power tools cannot reach without causing damage. Finger sanding is taxing, and it is not suitable for the deck because it creates dishes and grooves. So, using a sanding block in locations not easily reach by tools yields the best results. Remember: Teak is a naturally oily wood, so gumming of the grit is common.

More than likely, gel-coated, varnished, or painted surfaces are adjacent to the teak. These finishes could be easily damaged if nicked by either a D/A sander or a grinder. So, it is a good idea to temporarily mask those surfaces needing protection. Thin (1/8”) plywood or sheet metal are suitable for this. Cardboard is not.

Teak is one of the softer of the hardwoods, so it is easy to quickly sand away a lot of teak when too aggressive. So, start with 80 Grit and lightly sand. Adjust pressure, speed, or sanding grit to refine the rate of removal. ALWAYS keep the sander moving over the surface. Pausing in one place will cause the sander to create a depression by removing excess material.

For badly weathered teak, it may be necessary to first use coarser 60 grit disks, but only IF there is enough teak deck thickness. Sanding to an 80-grit finish provides the extra needed traction on a heeled and pitching deck, while power vessels are often finished with 100 -120 grit for a smoother surface. When sanding, keep the disks as flat as possible without losing control of the sander. More surface area is used, avoiding gouging the deck with a disk edge. Sweep back and forth, keeping the sander constantly in motion. If the sander does not have a vacuum attachment, then vacuum frequently. Vacuuming will keep the dust under control and the work area clean, enhancing visibility.

Before Sanding

Before starting the sanding process, decide how much sanding is necessary.

If the deck is relatively thick, with plenty of caulk seam depth, but there are ridges in the deck easily felt with a thumbnail, it is okay to sand the deck surface to the desired smoothness, keeping wet deck traction in mind.

If the caulk seams are shallow and the teak planks are not thick enough to be recut deeper, then sand off proud caulking. This step will give the teak a light dressing. This sanded finish helps shed water a bit better, extending the deck life while determining a replacement plan. Keep in mind that weathered planks will continue to hold water on their surface, accelerating the decomposition process.

WHEN TO STOP SANDING A TEAK DECK

Whether a teak deck is thick or thin, here is a way to gauge when to stop sanding:

A noticeable color change occurs to the sanded teak. The original golden color returns while, at the same time, the teak in the grooves is still the weathered silver color. Watch the silver diminish while sanding. When it is gone, the deck is smooth – STOP SANDING! Wash the deck and check the seams.

NOTE: A Professional move is to stop a little sooner, leaving a silver hint on the planks to avoid over-sanding. During the last step of thoroughly wash the deck to remove the residual mixture of teak and caulk dust. If well sanded and washed, the little bit of silvering will disappear.

While sanding a teak deck, it is possible to discover that some deck areas are in good shape, while others have reached the end of their useful life. Teakdecking Systems often works with owners and captains to replace specific deck areas rather than replacing entire teak decks. When doing a partial replacement, the new decks will have a custom design to match the existing decks on the vessel.

Where is the deck installation performed?

Once a boat owner decides to add or replace a boat deck (in teak or composite), one of the first questions asked is: “Where do you do the deck installation?” The answer may be nearer than expected. (Spoiler Alert: The boat doesn’t have to be at Teakdecking Systems’ Florida or European facility.)

MODULAR DECKING

Teakdecking Systems creates modular decking in sections sized to fit in available transport. Decks longer than the interior length of a standard 40-foot shipping trailer or container are assembled as interlocking sections. So, panels small enough to fit in the transport and be easily handled by the installation crew within the vessel and shipyards’ confines.

GLOBAL SHIPMENT OF DECKING

For nearly 40 years, Teakdecking Systems has shipped modular deck systems and components across the United States and worldwide. A sampling of some of the northern hemisphere deck destinations includes Japan, North America—USA, Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas & the West Indies, England & Scotland, the shipyards of Europe, and Turkey. SHIPPING THE DECK TO THE BOAT

Since deck installation can be performed near the boat’s location or near where the boat is headed, the Teakdecking Systems’ Traffic Coordinator will arrange the logistics of getting, shall we say, big things to odd places.

This expansion also reduces delivery times and costs to those markets. (Currency fluctuations can sometimes make this beneficial, and sometimes not.)

BOAT LOCATION

Boat owners have extensive latitude in selecting a location for a deck replacement or addition, but a suitable facility must be chosen. The primary requirement is that the boat is out of the weather and in a climate somewhere between 45°F and 95°F (7°- 36°C). The reasons for this include (1) allowing the caulking and adhesives to properly cure, (2) enabling the installation personnel to work effectively, and (3) preventing rain or snow from creating damage or delays. Essentially, this is a building, shed, or tent where the boat (and equipment) can be relocated. It is unnecessary to haul the boat for a deck replacement or installation if in-the-water sheds are available that adequately shelter the boat.

PERSONNEL

Even more important than the facilities and equipment available are the carpenters hired to perform the work. If a deck replacement is required, the personnel need to know how to properly disassemble the boat to prepare for removing the existing teak. Then they will need to remove the old teak without damage to the vessel. Some owners (often with assistance from crew or friends) will remove the deck hardware (and sometimes the old teak deck) on smaller vessels to reduce the out-of-pocket expenses. This same group will need to reinstall the hardware onto the new teak or composite deck and recommission the boat for sea.

With boatyards and shipyards fulfilling the criteria of facilities, equipment, and personnel, it is prudent to meet with the service managers at nearby boatyards first. Determine if personnel installing the new modular teak decks have marine carpentry skills, along with experience installing modular teak decks. This could limit the available locations to a few boat or shipyards. Teakdecking Systems can provide recommendations. Further, TDS has their own trained and qualified installation technicians available to travel to the site and perform the work.

If a boat or shipyard has one or more qualified carpenters but no experience with modular deck systems, TDS will offer to send a technician to guide and assist the local carpenter(s) through the process. If qualified local carpenters are unavailable, TDS will assemble a complete team to perform the installation. This latter option is standard with large yacht projects in shipyards. The TDS technician(s) travel and subsistence costs are added to the project invoice. So, finding good local boat-building talent can pay for itself.

To find local boat service facilities, contact the Yacht Services department at TDS. For nearly 40 years, decks have been shipped globally, so they typically have suggestions for service in specific locations.

THREE PHASES OF ADDING OR REPLACING A DECK

According to TDS, there are three phases to replacing or adding a teak deck:

Templating (making an exact pattern on your boat for the replacement deck)
Manufacturing and assembly of the deck panels at the TDS facilities
Installation

After deciding to replace a deck (knowing where it will be done and who will do it), the first step of building the deck is to make a template, and this must be performed on the boat for accuracy.

Fortunately, like the installation location, there are multiple options for template making:

Follow Teakdecking Systems’ thorough and easy-to-follow “Template Making Instructions.”. These instructions detail how to assemble a template using 1/8″ plywood and hot glue (similar to making countertop patterns). The instructions explain how to build the pattern in sections to make it easy to crate and ship to TDS. Some owners make their templates. Additionally, a local marine carpenter or TDS technician can fabricate the stick template.
For projects in remote areas or where there is a timeline crunch or other constraints, Teakdecking Systems offers digitally templating services. TDS will send one or two technicians to the boat, depending on the project size, along with the necessary equipment. The process involves digitally capturing the deck’s shape and any internal details to an accuracy of about 2mm. As soon as the information is gathered, the files can be emailed to the TDS factory. There, plywood patterns are CNC cut, enabling the new teak deck(s) production to begin.

Digital Measurement of Deck

This digital system works well for large yachts, particularly those in transit between destinations. For example, a TDS digital templating team spent several days digitizing aboard a large sailing yacht anchored in the Caribbean shortly after arriving from Europe. Several months later, the new TDS teak decks traveled by container to meet the yacht halfway around the world in New Zealand for their installation. They fit perfectly.

After templating, the decks are built and shipped to the boat’s location for installation. So, while there are many good reasons to take a boat to Sarasota, Florida, adding a Teakdecking Systems modular teak deck system doesn’t need to be one of them. But TDS always welcomes visitors to the manufacturing facility.

How to Extend the Life of Teak Decking

Extend the life of teak decking and protect your investment with regular cleaning, maintenance, and repairs. The ultimate decking choice is teak because of its durability, anti-slip properties, rot resistance, and insulation, and, of course, its beauty. To maximize its value, clean it properly; lightly sand it once each year; and inspect for potential repairs. A properly maintained deck can last 5 to 15 years longer than one that is poorly maintained.

CLEAN FREQUENTLY … and CAREFULLY

FACT: There are cleaning methods that will sustain a teak deck and ones that will destroy it.

Teak is best cleaned with a soft-bristled brush using fresh or saltwater, and a single-part cleaner, such as the proprietary ECO Cleaners from Teakdecking Systems. These products are MARPOL and Florida Clean Marina certified, to help prevent water pollution.

Proper Cleaning Methods

Wash deck with a single-part cleaner ( Teakdecking Systems ECO cleaners ) and a soft-bristled brush or scrubbing pad like Scotch-Brite Maroon pad or equivalent, and rinse well. If a single-part cleaner is not available, use dishwashing liquids such as Dawn with a small amount of bleach. Boat soap is okay to use, too, but it has a low pH so it’s important to rinse well.
ALWAYS scrub AGAINST the grain lightly with the soft-bristled brush or scrubbing pad.
Wash often to keep residue from becoming ingrained in the wood.
Clean spills immediately to prevent damage to the teak.

NOTE: Rinsing often with salt water is recommended too. Many boat owners believe this is the best way to maintain and preserve teak, minimizing the use of cleaning agents.

IMPORTANT: Only use soft-bristled brushes or a scrubbing pad. A hard-bristled brush will wear away the softwood and shorten the life of the deck.

Improper Cleaning Methods

Teak is comprised of hard and soft wood. The growth rings of a teak tree form the dark hardwood, and the wood between these rings is the softwood. Therefore, when softwood is destroyed, deep ridges and uneven surfaces are created. Ridges trap debris, mold, and residues.

If a deck has proper care, a tight-grained marine deck constructed of vertical-grain teak will last longer because there is less softwood.

The following products DESTROY the softwood and should never be used for cleaning:

Power-washers
Two-part cleaners (highly-acidic)
Stiff-bristle brushes

CAUTION: Overly aggressive cleaning has the potential to damage the deck too. So, clean gently ONLY when needed.

PERFORM ANNUAL LIGHT SAND-OUT to EXTEND DECK LIFE

In addition to proper cleaning, perform an annual light sand-out (best performed by a highly experienced carpenter). A well-done sand-out will remove a thin layer of teak refreshing the surface and make it smooth. The teak’s natural oil is brought back to the surface. Further, the silver patina that naturally develops is removed with a light sand-out. This restores the teak to its original golden color should the owner prefer this look, but a grayed deck offers protection of the wood. Note, a gray deck may be cleaned and its color will not change.

As stated previously, the softwood naturally wears away faster. So, sand-outs keep the surface smooth, minimizing residue build-up in rough surfaces where softwood is worn.

A proper sand-out removes a thin layer of teak (and caulking) evenly,. The skilled carpenter commonly starts with 60 grit and finishes with 80-100 grit, using a dustless sander such as a Festool branded product.

To ensure success, only hire very skilled technicians with quality equipment to perform this task. Seek out professionals who have strong references. (Ask local boatyards for recommendations.) A skilled technician reduces the risk of an uneven sand-out or potential gouges in the wood. Teak is an expensive investment and a bad sand-out will unnecessarily reduce its useful life. Uneven surfaces can create low areas where water can accumulate.

IMPORTANT: Cleaning regularly will minimize the need for sanding.

INSPECT AND REPAIR CAULKING

Inspect decks for loose caulking or gaps . Look for missing or detached caulking which could allow water penetration. If no failures are visible, wet the deck. As the deck dries, look for areas that may stay wet longer than the surrounding teak. This is where failures may exist.

Repair missing or detached caulking immediately to prevent damage.

Caulking Repairs are Often Necessary

Remove and re-caulk cracked or hardened caulking. Caulking must be flexible to allow the deck to expand and contract.

Store boats under cover when possible
Bows and swim platforms often experience the most weather damage and require more maintenance, so protect these areas if possible

How to Clean Teak Decking

At Teakdecking Systems, we replace many teak decks that are damaged by improper maintenance. Remarkably, many of these decks were destroyed not through neglect, but because they were cleaned too often, too thoroughly, or too aggressively. Proper cleaning prevents damage, so read on to learn from the experts how to clean teak decks.

RULE #1

SCRUB ACROSS THE GRAIN

Scrub wood across the grain with a soft scrubbing pad or a soft bristle brush using a gentle cleanser (like ECO-100 or ECO-300 Cleaners), then rinse well with water. Scrubbing with the grain tears teak’s soft grain from the planks, creating a rough surface with ridges in the teak. A rough, weathered deck will collect debris and trap water where mold and mildew can develop.

For large areas, the use of rotary cleaning machines with dispenser tanks and soft bristle brushes is appropriate.

SANDING

Even with proper care, ridges can develop in the wood over time. When this happens, lightly sand the deck to smooth the surface. Furthermore, this will actually increase the life of the deck because a smooth surface prevents the grain from trapping dirt.

INSPECT THE DECK AFTER CLEANING

After cleaning and flushing the deck, check its condition. Look for any areas that remain wet after the rest of the deck has dried. Wetness may indicate a spot where the caulking in a seam has broken away from the teak, or a plug is failing. If so, repair these areas immediately to prevent water from getting under the deck. Once water is under the teak, a number of consequences can occur.

NOTE: If you can’t make an immediate repair, duct tape the opening to seal it temporarily.

RULE #2
DO NOT USE TWO-PART CLEANERS
UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY

Overuse, or improper use, of two-part caustic acid cleaners, shortens the life of teak decks by eating away the teak. Only use these cleaners when everything else has FAILED. Then follow the instructions carefully for the two-part cleaner, and be sure to use personal protective equipment (PPE) to safeguard skin (hands, arms, bare feet, legs) and eyes.

The caustic cleaner will attack surrounding paint, so protect it by wetting down the surfaces before starting and continuing to flush them during the cleaning process. (This is not a 100% guarantee of no paint damage.) Additionally, remember to flush topsides below scuppers and drains to prevent damage to the paint as the deck drains down the side of the hull.

If a two-part cleaner is necessary, be sure to rinse the deck thoroughly. Any remaining cleaner will continue to “eat” the teak and surrounding surfaces. Remember – a two-part cleaner is an acid, and it is not recommended unless necessary.

RULE #3
BE CAREFUL USING CHLORINE BLEACH

Chlorine bleach will attack most caulking products (making them thick and sticky) and will damage seam integrity. However, SIS-440 Teak Deck Caulking is specially formulated for teak decks and is resistant to bleach. For SIS-440, only the top layer of the caulk (the binding layer) will be affected by bleach, creating a black “rub off.” After exposure to bleach, a light sanding of SIS-440 Caulking will restore its normal properties, and the caulking will continue to be UV and chemical resistant.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER USE A PRESSURE WASHER

Teak is comprised of hard and soft wood. A pressure washer will destroy the soft wood, leaving deep ridges in the deck that will collect water and debris. The life of teak decks is significantly shortened by pressure washers. So, they should never be used.

ECO-100 (POWDER)

This concentrated teak cleaner mixes easily with water and contains no acid, caustic sodas or phosphates. It cleans and brightens without removing the soft fibers of teak. It removes mold and mildew and is economical.

ECO-300 (LIQUID)

This ready-to-use cleaner has the same benefits of ECO-100 but does not need to be mixed with water. It adheres to the scrubbing pad and is ready-to-use. ECO-300 has strong brightening agents that can restore teak to its original color.

USER NOTE: ECO-100 is commonly the first choice for cleaning decks. If a brighter finish is needed, then ECO-300 is used as a second step.

Consider This

Know the reputation of the company you choose. A quick online search can show reviews, ratings, or input from fellow yacht owners. Learn from their experience!
Know the quality of the materials the company uses. Plantation, or fast-growing teak, does not have the tight rings of seasoned, long-term old-growth teak, which is stronger, less permeable, and longer-lasting than the cheaper alternative.
Look at projects the company has done, and the workload currently scheduled. Your job could be put in a long queue, and your boat could be out of commission or charter for longer than expected.
Choose a reputable yard and have the work done there so other projects can be scheduled simultaneously. Such cooperative work with various subcontractors will help you get your jobs done more efficiently.
Prepare the job properly: Ensure the area is clean, accessible, safe, and done in a water-tight environment. Water is the enemy when replacing a teak deck—another good reason to choose a yard with covered space.
Important: Check to see if the company you choose has legal teak in their possession or if they are buying your teak when you place your order.

At the METS Tradeshow, TDS CEO Richard Strauss participated in a panel discussion organized by Professional Boatbuilders magazine, focusing on the topic of teak and its alternatives. Moderated by Aaron Porter, he was joined by fellow panelists Xavier ardevol and naval architect Marnix Hoekstra to discuss teak and teak alternatives.

Richard shared valuable insights into different types of teak, as well as the various alternative products currently available in the market.

TDS completes the third phase of USS ALABAMA’S teak deck replacement project.

TDS, was appointed by USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park to undertake the task of replacing the 80-year-old teak deck on the iconic WWII battleship. Commencing in November 2021, the ambitious three-year deck replacement project involved meticulous digitization and engineering of the deck, followed by installation which began in February 2022. Today, we proudly announce the successful completion of the third phase out of five, with the new deck expected to be fully completed in July 2024.

Covering an expansive area of 21,000 ft2, the fabrication of the deck is undertaken at TDS’s manufacturing facility in Sarasota. The estimated hours for fabrication are 19,000, while installation demands 21,000 hours of dedicated craftmanship. A highly skilled team comprising of 6-8 members from TDS is onboard the historic battleship, ensuring the installation of the new deck.

With the completion of the third phase, visitors can once again enjoy full access to the starboard side of the WWII battleship USS ALABAMA. As we move forward with the project, a temporary ramp has been placed at the top of the battleship’s gangway for the duration of the project.

To commemorate this significant endeavor and support the teak deck replacement project, visitors can purchase finished items crafted from the worn original planks. Additionally, larger dimensions of the unfinished teak planks are sold by the linear foot by appointment only. All proceeds go directly to the funding of teak deck replacement project.

This project presents significant challenges, considering that the memorial park remains accessible to visitors, but our team are driven by a deep satisfaction of playing a part in restoring the historic battleship back to its former glory”.

“Replacing our World War II teak deck is a three-year, $8.5 million project. Maintenance of the battleship, submarine and park exhibits is expensive. We work those requirements simultaneously with the teak deck project,” said USS ALABAMA Battleship Commission Chairman Terry Ankerson.
